Flat tire or out of gas on a North Jersey highway: what to do

Here is a quick guide to what to do, starting with keeping yourself safe.

First, get safe

  • Turn on your hazard lights and pull as far onto the right shoulder as you can, or take the next exit if the car can still move.
  • If you can get out safely on the side away from traffic, wait behind a barrier or well off the road.
  • If you can't get away from traffic safely, stay in the car with your seat belt on.
  • If anyone is hurt or you're in a dangerous spot, call 911.

I-80, I-280 and I-287

New Jersey's Department of Transportation runs a Safety Service Patrol on parts of these interstates at set hours. See where it patrols. If it can't reach you and you're inside our service area, call us during our hours, Mon–Sat 8am–10pm; we're closed on Sundays.

Local roads and other highways

On local streets and roads like Routes 3, 4, 17, 21, 46 and 1&9 inside our service area, call MnM Roadside at (973) 767-4084, Mon–Sat 8am–10pm. We open locked cars, change flat tires, repair tires, jump start batteries, bring emergency fuel and remove wheel locks.

When you call anyone, tell them

  • The road, the direction you were heading, and the nearest exit, mile marker or landmark.
  • What happened, and whether you have a spare tire.
  • Your car's make, model and color.
